Figurative Language in Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury uses a lot of figurative language in this novel. For example on page 7, Clarisse's face is described as bright as snow in the moonlight. On page 36, there is a "fountain of books" when Montag and the fire men go to the lady's house to burn her books. Ray also uses figurative language on page 56, Mildreds hand is frozen behind her pillow. Everytime Ray uses figurative language it is very descriptive. I can picture the brightness of snow in moonlight, or her hand frozen, not moving an inch, behind her pillow.
When Clarisse's face is as bright as snow, Ray uses a simile to compare the brightness of her face to snow in the moonlight. This quote creates a beautiful, peaceful mood. As well as a peacefully authors tone. On page 36, when Ray Bradbury mentions the fountain of books. He describes books as flowing and dead. For me this made actually made a majestic, wealthy mood. When I think of fountain I think fancy restaurants, nice houses, and hotels. Smooth flow of water, recycling within the fountain. As for authors tone, Bradbury had a tone in which everything get recycled. Finally, when Mildred's hand is frozen behind her pillow. Bradbury uses a hyperbole to emphasize how mindless everyone is. This creates a creepy, depressing mood. As well as a creepy authors tone.
